Interview with Haulston Steele - 2017 Silver Lake Grad - Topeka's Best Senior Portrait Photographers








 Absolutely awesome session with Haulston Steele from Silver Lake! We traveled out to just west of Junction City to an amazing salvage called Easy Jack and Sons Auto Salvage. That was like a museum of automotive history. They had such an incredible collection of antique cars and trucks it made the whole trip absolutely worth it! Besides that, Haulston is one cool dude. He is so down to earth and nice and easy going, shooting him was a blast. Really respectable and even for the short amount of time I spent with him, I could easily tell he is really an upstanding young man. I enjoyed his shoot immensely and love how his photos turned out! T.H. Peterson: What's the best thing about Silver Lake High School? 
Haulston: Its a small school so you know everyone pretty well.
T.H. P.: We went to an awesome location for you senior portraits. What made you choose this really cool Salvage yard? 
Haulston: I chose this salvage yard, because it is full of very iconic cars that are great art pieces with their petina.
T.H. P.: What are your plans after high school? 
Haulston: My plans after high school are to continue venturing into the automotive industry, with expanding my business.
T.H. P.: Are you a dog or cat person? 
Haulston: Dog, because cats have terrible attitudes.
T.H. P.: What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done? 
Haulston: There is a long list of dangerous things, but the most dangerous is probably almost getting carjacked in the worst part of Kansas City.
T.H. P.: What's your favorite place to eat? 
Haulston: Anywhere, except Buffalo Wild Wings. 
T.H. P.: What did you like most about your session with us? 
Haulston: I really enjoyed the session, because Tommy has a great eye for the perfect photo!
T.H. P.: What would people be surprised to learn about you? 
Haulston: That I drive a Honda Civic everyday instead of the fancy trucks I have owned.
T.H. P.: What is your biggest pet peeve? 
Haulston: My biggest pet peeve is when somebody uses a slang word that makes absolutely no sense at all or listens to Chance the rapper. Both of these things are done by my best friend Brock Simone.
T.H. P.: What is the best movie you have seen in 2017 so far? 
Haulston: My favorite has been Super Troopers even though it is over 10 years old and i've watched it over 5 times.

Interview with Adrian Romero - Topeka West Class of 2026 - Topeka's Best Senior Portraits

Adrian is a senior at Topeka West, graduating with the Class of 2026. She’s been playing soccer since 3rd grade, and her love for the game really showed during her session. She’s confident, driven, and full of energy—and on top of that, incredibly photogenic with a beautiful, bright smile. We spent a lot of time focusing on her passion for soccer, and it was clear how much it means to her. At the end of the session, we headed out to the water at Shawnee Lake, just in time for the most incredible sunset. The sky lit up in a rich orange glow, giving us the perfect backdrop. I recently had the joy of photographing sweet little Dannie for her newborn session. She is absolutely precious and so tiny! It feels like just yesterday I was capturing her big sister's newborn photos, and it's always such a treat to see this wonderful family again. They are completely in love with their newest addition, and you can feel the joy and love they have for her in every moment. Some of my favorite images from the session were the ones with her mom, dad, and big sisters. You can see the special bond they all share, and those photos really show how much love surrounds Dannie. Shelbi is a senior at Shawnee Heights High School, and photographing her was such a joy! We started at her home, and her backyard was like a hidden park—full of gorgeous spots for pictures. Shelbi has the sweetest personality and a smile that lights up every photo. She was so easygoing and fun to be around, which made the session feel relaxed and natural. After that, we made our way to Shawnee Lake, and the timing couldn’t have been better. The sun was setting right over the water, giving us the most beautiful golden light. Jayce's senior session was such a fun one! We started in the NOTO Arts District, where the colorful murals and artistic vibe gave us a great backdrop. The sun was low in the sky, casting a warm golden light that made everything glow. Jayce was easygoing and had a great smile, which made my job super easy. He brought a relaxed energy to the shoot, and we had a good time exploring the area and finding cool spots to shoot. After that, we made our way out to Shawnee State Fishing Lake just in time for sunset. The sky was glowing over the water, and it looked absolutely amazing. Briar’s senior session at the Kansas History Museum was such a joy to photograph! Even though we shot in the middle of the day, the light was absolutely amazing, and it lit up her great smile in every photo. How to Prepare for a Photo Session - Topeka's Best Family Portrait Photographers

Select outfits that will make for a timeless portrait. Choose practical clothing items, and keep the location and time of year in mind.  Select clothing items and accessories that are not too distracting or that you will have to adjust often during the session (think long necklaces or ruffled tops on a windy day).  Keep in mind the weather, wind speed, and humidity/chance of rain.  If you have littles, bring them some snacks to help give them incentives during the session.  This can help us to get kids to cooperate and make or break a session.  If it is windy, wear your hair up.  Trimming your bangs/hair slightly to keep them out of your eyes is a great idea, too! Use product like mousse, gel, pomade, and hairspray to tame your mane!    Pick shoes that will be easy to walk in at the location of the session.  For example, high heels are not recommended for sunflower shoots, but would look great in an urban/downtown ...

I had a great time photographing Paxton, a senior at Silver Lake High School. We took most of his photos on the football field and in the weight room—two places that really show who he is. Paxton is not only a football player but also a dedicated powerlifter. He throws up some seriously impressive numbers, and it was awesome to capture that strength and focus on camera. Paxton brought his mom and girlfriend along for the session, and we got some great images with both of them. You can tell he’s got a strong support system, and that always makes a difference. April and John’s engagement session at Liquid Art Winery in Manhattan, KS was an absolute dream. The rolling hills made the perfect backdrop, especially as the sun began to set and cast a warm golden glow across the landscape. The weather couldn’t have been better—clear skies, soft light, and just the right breeze. Even more special, we took their photos at the exact spot where they’ll be saying “I do,” which made the whole session feel even more meaningful. These two were so easy to photograph. Interview with Ki-Bo Throssell - Royal Valley Class of 2026 - Topeka's Best Senior Portraits

Ki-Bo’s senior session at Ted Ensley Gardens was one of my favorites this year. We got up early to catch the sunrise over the lake, and even though rain made us postpone the first try, it was worth the wait. The sky was full of dramatic clouds that made the morning light extra beautiful. Ki-Bo was absolutely stunning and so natural in front of the camera. Her smile and sweet giggle made every photo feel full of life. We explored the whole garden, finding so many great spots and angles to work with. From the lake views to the flowers and trees, every background seemed to match her calm and joyful spirit. Ki-Bo made my job easy, and I’m so happy with how her photos turned out.
