Harvey's newborn session - Interview with mom - Topeka Newborn Photographers

 Harvey and all of his family came in for a really unique and special session!  Harvey’s mom has been our client and we were so happy when we shot her pregnancy announcement around the holidays.  We were even happier to meet Harvey, swaddle him up like Harry Potter, and take some really awesome photos! We got some great shots of him with his siblings, then spent some time wrapping and posing him.  We loved his session and we know you will too!
 T.H. Peterson:  What emotions did you experience when you found out you were pregnant with Harvey?

Sara:  Numb disbelief. We were not trying to have another baby, but clearly the universe felt like our family wasn’t complete just yet.


T.H. P.:  How are you adjusting to adding him to the family?
Sara:  As well as you can be. We are all completely smitten with him. Sleep is lacking though.
 T.H. P.:  Did you have any unique experiences with this pregnancy? Was it different from your other pregnancies?

Sara:  Other than the fact that he was my second IUD pregnancy I can’t think of anything. That usually drops some jaws when I tell people. IUD’s are supposed to be a pretty unbeatable defense against pregnancy and it’s failed me twice. I can’t complain though, because I wouldn’t have Harvey or his sister Elaina otherwise.  ll of my pregnancies were pretty breezy and he was no different. Harvey’s was probably the easiest next to my pregnancy with my oldest.


T.H. P.:  How did you decide on the name Harvey?

Sara:  It was just a name I saw on a baby name list online. It was one of three names that Dustin and I could agree on. Took us 32 weeks and a few death threats, but we finally settled on Harvey and I think it fits him perfectly.  


T.H. P.:  Describe your first night home as a family.

Sara:  Our first night was very relaxed. We all just sat around staring at Harvey and reveling in his sweetness.

I knew pretty quickly that Parker’s senior session was going to be a good one. We started at Washburn Rural High School in the room where he trains for wrestling, so we had some fun working the wrestling theme into his photos with some different poses and shots. Parker has a lot of confidence, and it was great seeing that personality come out in front of the camera. From there, we headed downtown and made stops at the Capitol and one of my favorite graffiti spots, where we got some really killer shots. Interview with Caleb Menke - Hayden High Class of 2027 - Topeka's Best Senior Portraits

Caleb is a senior at Hayden High School, and baseball was a big part of his senior session. He also  wrestles and plays football, but for his session we decided to focus on baseball. We started out with some baseball photos, then headed over to Gage Park before finishing up at the Governor’s Mansion. Caleb was just a really great guy to photograph. He’s down to earth, funny, has a great personality, and was very natural in front of the camera. His family was with him for the session, and it was pretty obvious how close they are, which was really cool to see. The evening itself couldn’t have been much better. We had some really beautiful skies, and one of my favorite parts of the session was when we put Caleb in his letterman jacket and the clouds started getting really dramatic. Interview with Julian Ferrer - Osage City Class of 2027 - Osage County's Best Senior Portraits

Julian was an awesome senior to photograph! We started out at Four Corners near Scranton, then headed to Osage County Fishing Lake before finishing up in downtown Osage City. He was super photogenic, had a great smile and expressions, and was just really easy to photograph. He was personable, relaxed, and made the whole session a lot of fun. I loved how naturally everything came together. By the time we got to Osage City, the sun was sitting right on the horizon and the golden hour light was absolutely amazing. The colors were so rich, the weather was beautiful, and we had a great time walking around downtown and creating some really great images. I feel like we were able to capture Julian's personality while also creating images that really flattered him. Interview with Maddy Hladky - Washburn Rural High Class of 2027 - Topeka's Best Senior Portraits

We had a great time photographing Maddy for her senior session at Gage Park and the Rose Garden. It was interesting because I don't normally get a request to do an entire senior session in one location, but Gage Park has so much to offer that it was a nice challenge to get creative and capture an entire session within the confines of one location that we use quite often. We really got to explore the park, and before we knew it, the session was over. Maddy is a beautiful young lady; great smile. She's friendly, smart, and just a lot of fun to photograph. I really loved the photos we got in the Rose Garden itself. Maddy was wearing a pink top, and some of my favorite images were with the sunset hitting her hair and the pink roses in the background. Cassie and Brandon's amazing day! The Beacon Wedding Venue - Topeka Wedding Photography

Brandon and Cassie were married last Saturday at The Beacon in Topeka, and what a beautiful day it was! The Beacon is such a classic, historic venue, and it made the perfect backdrop for their wedding. It was the last really hot day of summer before all the cool weather moved in, so we stayed inside the entire time. Honestly, though, with a building this beautiful, we never once wished we were outside. The lighting was amazing, there were so many different rooms and looks to work with, and the architecture was just gorgeous. One of my favorite moments was photographing Cassie on the huge grand staircase on the lower level, showing off her long train. It was absolutely stunning. And then there were the tears! I joked with Brandon and Cassie about how many happy emotions were bubbling over throughout the day. From a photography standpoint, it made for such an amazing experience because there were so many tender moments, happy tears, hugs, and genuine connections happening all around them...

Interview with Riley Mohler - Silver Lake High Class of 2027 - Topeka's Best Senior Portraits

I’ve been photographing Riley and her family since she was little, so getting to photograph her senior pictures was pretty special. We had an amazing session at Gage Park, and Riley was absolutely fantastic in front of the camera. She is super photogenic, has tons of confidence, and has a great smile and expression. She’s also just one of those people who is really easy to photograph because she’s so personable and completely natural in front of the camera. And I have to say, I loved her hairstyle for the session! Riley is a softball player and will be continuing to play in college, so of course we had to work some of that into her senior session. Interview with Brek Wahlmeier - Hayden High Class of 2027 - Topeka's Best Senior Portraits

We had a great time photographing Brek for his senior pictures! We started off at the natatorium, where we got some really awesome and dramatic swimming photos. From there, we headed to the tennis courts at Hayden High School, where Brek goes to school. We were able to get some really cool shots there, both dramatic and fun. Brek was a cool guy, had a great smile, and was willing to try anything we wanted to do. After the tennis courts, we headed downtown and got some photos on top of a parking garage, along with a spot that gave us lots of variety. One of his outfits was a suit, and I thought that was a really great look for him. He looked sharp! All in all, it was a very fun session, and I really enjoyed working with Brek. How to Prepare for a Photo Session - Topeka's Best Family Portrait Photographers

Select outfits that will make for a timeless portrait. Choose practical clothing items, and keep the location and time of year in mind.  Select clothing items and accessories that are not too distracting or that you will have to adjust often during the session (think long necklaces or ruffled tops on a windy day).  Keep in mind the weather, wind speed, and humidity/chance of rain.  If you have littles, bring them some snacks to help give them incentives during the session.  This can help us to get kids to cooperate and make or break a session.  If it is windy, wear your hair up.  Trimming your bangs/hair slightly to keep them out of your eyes is a great idea, too! Use product like mousse, gel, pomade, and hairspray to tame your mane!    Pick shoes that will be easy to walk in at the location of the session.  For example, high heels are not recommended for sunflower shoots, but would look great in an urban/downtown ...

Maddie was such a sweet girl and just an absolute pleasure to photograph. Basketball is a huge part of her life, and she has committed to play basketball at K-State after she graduates, which is pretty awesome. We had a lot of fun with her senior session because she brought a really cool variety of outfits. Every outfit gave us a completely different look, and we were able to get some really great images downtown before heading out to a more country setting. Maddie was just really easy to photograph. She had a great smile, great expressions, and honestly, I don't think she has a bad angle. By the time we got out to the country, the skies were just incredible. Misa and Shanehse's senior session - Class of 2027 - Topeka's Best Senior Portraits

I met up with Misa and her brother Shanehse at Osage County Fishing Lake for a sunrise sibling session. We did a few pictures together, but most of the session was individual pictures of each of them. They were both a little on the quiet side, but they were a lot of fun to work with, and you could tell right away that they really get along. It was a beautiful morning with great weather, and we were able to get some really cool shots of them together along with a lot of great individual images. Mom came along for the session and was smiling the whole time, just enjoying watching her kids get their pictures taken. Before we knew it, the session was over. I really felt like we got some images that showed their personalities, especially their great smiles.
