T.H. Peterson: Can you tell me how Rock Creek Cafe came to be?

Deborah: The Cafe came to be because of my family.  My grandfather was a key investor and consultant during the remodeling, even making a few  carpentry things for us. My uncle and parents were key people in the remodeling doing all the grunt work themselves. It was a grueling 7 month remodel but we came out all still friends.  

T.H. P.: What are your most popular items on the menu?

Deborah: I can't pin one item as a main seller at the Cafe.  The Turkey Club is popular as much as our Pork Burger.  Every breakfast and lunch item is popular with our friends that come in to eat!


T.H. P.: What are your goals for the cafe?

Deborah: Cafe goals are still developing. We will have BBQ once we get all the things built for it that we need. Then we will expand our hours to match our new BBQ menu.
T.H. P.: How did you come up with the name?

Deborah:  I named the Cafe after the first stop on the Santa Fe Trail on the east side of Overbrook. 


T.H. P.: Can you tell me a little bit about your staff?

Deborah: All our staff are happy to help you.  Combined we have several years industry experience and look forward to you enjoying your time with us!


T.H. P.: What would you like the city of Overbrook to know about Rock Creek Cafe?

Deborah: The Cafe is locally owned and operated by a family that's been in Overbrook since the 1870s. All we strive for is to make our friends and family and visitors to Overbrook well fed.

I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful senior named Jahara from Topeka High. We started her session in downtown Topeka and then headed to Ward Meade Park, which gave us the perfect mix of urban and natural backgrounds. Jahara looked stunning with her amazing makeup and radiant smile—she truly didn’t take a single bad photo! We had so much fun with her, laughing and chatting the whole time. We had the pleasure of photographing Noah for his senior session in Manhattan. Originally from Oregon, he now calls Kansas home and attends Manhattan High. Ava was absolutely beautiful for her senior portrait session! We had an amazing time capturing her both in the studio and outdoors, and every shot turned out stunning. One of the highlights of her session was getting to include her adorable big dog, Goose. He was such a sweetheart, and the photos of them together were just perfect! When we headed outside, it was freezing ! But Ava came prepared with her cowhide blanket, and let me tell you—it looked incredible. I even told her she looked like she just stepped out of a catalog! I recently photographed a branding session with Andy McKee , an incredibly talented guitar player. I hate to just call him just a guitar player, he was very versatile with his playing... an amazing talent. We chose Iliff Commons for the location, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The lighting, the weather—everything came together beautifully. It created a warm and natural backdrop that matched the mood we wanted for his photos. Before the session, I wasn’t too familiar with Andy’s work, but after meeting him, I quickly realized just how talented and respected he is in his field. How to Prepare for a Photo Session - Topeka's Best Family Portrait Photographers

Select outfits that will make for a timeless portrait. Choose practical clothing items, and keep the location and time of year in mind.  Select clothing items and accessories that are not too distracting or that you will have to adjust often during the session (think long necklaces or ruffled tops on a windy day).  Keep in mind the weather, wind speed, and humidity/chance of rain.  If you have littles, bring them some snacks to help give them incentives during the session.  This can help us to get kids to cooperate and make or break a session.  If it is windy, wear your hair up.  Trimming your bangs/hair slightly to keep them out of your eyes is a great idea, too! Use product like mousse, gel, pomade, and hairspray to tame your mane!    Pick shoes that will be easy to walk in at the location of the session.  For example, high heels are not recommended for sunflower shoots, but would look great in an urban/downtown ...

Meet sweet baby Amelia! She was an absolute dream during her newborn session—so smiley and full of sweetness. She slept soundly, letting us gently pose her, and was the perfect little model. Zendaya was an absolute dream to photograph! She was calm, sweet, and full of the most precious expressions. From tiny smiles to curious looks, she gave us so many beautiful moments to capture.
